The sin of been: Other. Analysis of some Monstrous Representations of American Indigenous (XVI th – XVIII th Century).
The following work raises at a reflexion about American indegenous images, produced by travelers and explores of the old continent, principally between s16th and 18th century, this images had a large difusion inside Europe. In most part of these images is operating a monstrification about indigenous, fruit of a complex process, where the discovery of similarities with the other, produce its withdrawal, from this visual representations.
In this way, the text is divided in two parts: in the fisrt one the analysis of the images where indigenous are represented like a physical monster is made, and in the second, appears the analysis of engravings where indigenous are characterized like monsters because of their cultural practices. According to this, these images are understood as cultural representations, is to say, those where the productor of the image infiltrate forms and contents of his own culture in the reprsentation of the America other.
