The logic of ethnographic research and the computational mediation of communication. Old problems with a new emphasis.
This article reviews some of the basic categories of the logic of ethnographic research, in the frame of the computer mediated communication. A reflexive, critical approach to the technoinstrumental paradigm of communication is the point of departure to resituate, in a new pespective, the old categories of intersubjectivity and thick description, particularly concerning the localization and embodiment of the practices and the social subjects. These categories of the ethnographic research are presented here under new pressures, which join the pressures produced around the textual turn in ethnography. A leading thread with those new pressures is the refiguration of the concept of holism.
